Choice Proof 1907 High Relief Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle

1907 $20 High Relief PR64 NGC. Although there is continuing debate regarding the differences between proof and business strike High Relief double eagles, and even the mere existence of proof examples, it is important to understand what is expected of those coins certified as proofs by NGC. Additional information regarding these coins may be found in the description of the PR66 example in the present sale. Examination of the two examples in this sale yield several similarities that are rarely found on those certified as business strikes. While die polishing lines are visible to some degree on all High Relief double eagles, it is the visibility of these lines that help to determine the striking status. Not only do both proofs offered here have heavy and highly visible die polishing lines, but careful comparison shows that they are exactly the same on both coins. This means that these two pieces were, in fact, struck from the same physical coinage dies. Another similarity is the sharpness of strike. While all High Relief double eagles are well defined, due to multiple impressions from the press, these coins from the proof die pair are far sharper than typically seen.
This example is a splendid near-Gem, with satiny greenish-yellow gold luster and amazing surfaces. Every detail is boldly defined, and the die polishing lines discussed above have imparted a splendid satiny appearance, almost reflective in nature.
