Description

Superb Gem Proof 1859 Indian Cent
Distinctly Contrasted

1859 1C PR67 NGC. An important one-year type coin, with a reported mintage of 800 pieces. Richard Snow writes of the 1859 proof in his Flying Eagle and Indian Cents reference: "Very rare, as many were unsold and melted. Probably under a hundred pieces survive as no question proofs. Intense collector demand for this one year type." Walter Breen asks in his Proof Encyclopedia, "Do as many as forty survive?"

Many more examples appear in the combined certified population, but this specimen remains one of the best. Reflective fields are orange-gold, contrasting with distinctly frosted devices that have a lighter tan appearance. Amazing all-around quality and eye appeal. NGC has graded three specimens in the PR67 range -- this piece, a Plus Star, and a Cameo specimen -- but none numerically finer (3/13).
