Desirable Gem Proof 1859 Indian Head Cent

1859 1C PR 65 NGC. Although numismatic scholars assert that 800 proof 1859 Indian Head cents were struck, Walter Breen (Encyclopedia, 1977) states that this issue is surprisingly scarce in today's market. As many pieces were probably melted at the end of 1859 and countless other examples diminished in value due to mishandling over the decades, the desirability of this lovely Gem should be readily evident to all cent collectors. The partially reflective fields contrast nicely with the more thinly veiled devices. Smooth and problem-free, the surfaces show rose-tan patina with mottled golden undertones throughout. It is difficult for us to imagine another Gem representative that matches the aesthetic appeal of this gorgeous specimen.
    From the Richard Doyle Collection.
