    Description

Unsurpassable Gem Proof 1861 Indian Cent

1861 1C PR66 NGC. A well struck and beautifully preserved Gem that has a lovely snow-white appearance overall. Interestingly, the first 1 in the date has a different serif style than the final 1. For pedigree purposes, a couple of small planchet indentions (as struck) are seen at the lower portion of the Indian's neck. While the Guide Book suggests a mintage of 1,000 pieces, many were eventually melted as unsold by the Mint, and this example represents one of only 5 thus far graded PR66 (PCGS and NGC combined) with none finer (7/03).(#2256)

    Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 229B, PCGS# 2256)

    Weight: 4.67 grams

    Metal: 88% Copper, 12% Nickel
