Proof 1861 Indian Cent Rarity, Condition Census PR66 Quality

1861 1C PR66 NGC. Writing in the December 2002 issue of "Longacre's Ledger," Ron Sirna, Jr. opines that the 1861 is the rarest date in the proof copper-nickel Indian Cent series of 1859-1864. He also states that the Philadelphia Mint's lack of care during production may explain the rarity of this issue, particularly in grades above the PR64 level. Since many examples received only one blow from inadequately polished dies, numerous proof 1861 Indian Cents were probable spent, melted as unsold, or otherwise mishandled.
The premium quality Gem in this lot easily qualifies for Condition Census standing. Both sides shimmer with uniform brightness and evenly distributed golden-tan color. Needle sharp striking definition is noted throughout, but there is not a single grade-limiting blemish in evidence. One can, however, see a pair of identifying planchet voids (as produced) over Liberty's neck. NGC and PCGS combined have seen a mere five specimens in PR66, and none finer (1/03).
