Description

1861 Indian Cent, PR66
Elusive Copper-Nickel Proof, CAC
Tied for Finest at PCGS

1861 1C PR66 PCGS. CAC. Snow-PR2. Three die pairs exist for the 1861 Indian cents, producing a reported mintage of 1,000 pieces, although far fewer than that number were actually sold. Rick Snow reports only 134 proofs were sold by April 30. The onset of the Civil War diminished subsequent sales and any remaining proofs were either released into circulation or destroyed. Today, PCGS and NGC report only 294 grading events for the 1861 proofs in all grades combined. The Snow-PR2 proofs are typically of higher quality than the other two die pairs -- a fact that is confirmed by this exceptional Premium Gem with CAC endorsement. Deeply reflective fields show faint hints of copper-gold on the nickel-white obverse, with the reverse slightly less reflective beneath peach and light-orange hues. The strike is pinpoint sharp throughout both sides. This exceptional proof is tied for the finest graded at PCGS. Population: 5 in 66, 0 finer. CAC: 3 in 66, 0 finer (9/24).(Registry values: N4719)
