    1861 Indian Cent, PR66
Tied for Finest Certified at PCGS

1861 1C PR66 PCGS. Despite a generous reported mintage of 1,000 pieces, the 1861 proof Indian cent is a key issue in the proof series today. Most of the coins went unsold and were destroyed or perhaps released into circulation after the end of the year. The dies were of poor quality and the hard copper-nickel composition of the planchets made detailed striking problematic. As a result, examples in Premium Gem condition, with a decent strike, are very rare today.

The present coin is a welcome exception to the rule, with sharp definition on most design elements. The pristine fields are deeply mirrored and show a few highlights of jade and lavender toning. Close inspection with a loupe reveals a single minor contact mark near the ear. Eye appeal is outstanding. Population: 2 in 66, 0 finer (8/13).(Registry values: N4719)
