Description

Starkly Contrasted 1862 Indian Cent
PR66 Cameo

1862 1C PR66 Cameo NGC. The 1862 is the unquestioned date for type purposes in the copper-nickel series. While the mintage of 550 proofs is only marginally higher than other dates, the quality was extraordinarily high. There was also a hoard of 200 proofs that surfaced many years ago. This is an exceptional, deeply mirrored example with sharply contrasting mint frost over the devices. Much of the original "white" color remains, with just a hint of pale reddish patina on each side. An outstanding type coin. Census: 20 in 66 Cameo, 5 finer (2/10).(Registry values: P3)
