    1863 Indian Cent, PR66 Cameo
Among the Finest Seen at PCGS

1863 1C PR66 Cameo PCGS. CAC. The 2019 Guide Book estimates between 800 to 1,000 proof Indian cents were struck in 1863, but Indian cent specialist Rick Snow opts for a smaller production total of 460 pieces. Certainly, fewer coins were actually distributed, as collector demand was at a low ebb amidst the turmoil and uncertainty of the Civil War. The proof mintage was similar to that of 1862, but the 1863 proofs are nearly twice as rare in today's market. Fortunately, the 1863 proofs were well-produced, and many examples display excellent cameo contrast.

Like most proof 1863 Indian cents, this delightful Premium Gem was struck from the Snow-PR1 dies, with unpolished centers on the first A in STATES and the last A in AMERICA. Parallel vertical die lines are evident in front of the eye and a small lump shows on the lower edge of the ribbon, and below the I in LIBERTY. The design elements exhibit razor-sharp definition throughout and the deeply reflective fields contrast boldly with the frosty devices. The eye appeal is terrific. Population: 15 in 66 (1 in 66+) Cameo, 0 finer. CAC: 6 in 66, 0 finer (10/18).
