Deeply Mirrored Cameo Proof 1864 Bronze Cent

1864 1C Bronze PR66 Red Cameo PCGS. The 1864 is one of the rarest dates in the bronze series of Indian cents, and it is underappreciated by most collectors, except those who are seeking one of the finer examples for a Registry Set. Only 470 proofs were struck, and that number is open to debate. Indian cent specialist Ron Sirna believes the correct mintage figure to be closer to 300 pieces. This lovely Gem has deeply mirrored fields with sharply contrasting devices on each side. The deep cherry-red color on the obverse lightens considerably on the reverse to an almost copper-nickel whitish-gray coloration. A splendid, problem-free coin that will surely find its way into one of the finest sets of Indian cents that are being assembled today. Population: 1 in 66 Cameo, none are finer (10/03).
