Noteworthy Proof 1864 Bronze Indian Head Cent, PR 65 Red PCGS

1864 1C Bronze PR 65 Red PCGS. A deserved rarity in the Indian Head proof series with a mintage of about 100 pieces. This issue is also of monumental importance among type collectors as it is the first year of bronze coinage and the only proof Indian Head without the designer's initial L on the bust. This specimen displays the blunt bust of the 1861-63 coinage, no extra outlines around the letters, and the reverse of the 1863 bronze pattern cents with a small spine extending down from the crosslet of the reverse Ns. These features, combined with the sharp wire rim and uncommonly bold impression, should suffice to distinguish this original proof from the myriad prooflike business strikes that abound in the numismatic marketplace. While this coin displays the dull appearance that typifies 1864 proof cents and two cent pieces, the fields are devoid of mint frost and exhibit deep, watery reflectivity. The surfaces are smooth and predominantly orange-red, although we note a few isolated areas of intense cherry-red color. An important and elusive piece at the gem level that should excite the numerous collectors who specialize in this series. Population: 6 in 65, 2 finer (6/99).
