    Description

Gem Cameo Proof 1864 Copper-Nickel Cent

1864 1C Copper Nickel PR65 Cameo PCGS. Richard Snow estimates that no more than 100 pieces exist today in all grades out of the original mintage of 370 proofs for the copper-nickel type. No one has estimated the number of cameo proofs that may exist, but the number has to be quite small, probably no more than a couple of dozen pieces. The contrast is quite pronounced on this coin, and is aided considerably by the depth of mirrored reflectivity in the fields. The pale "white" surfaces of the copper-nickel alloy show just the slightest tinge of rose patina on each side. An outstanding proof and a piece that must be seen to be fully appreciated. Population: 4 in 65, 2 finer (9/02).
