Description

1865 Indian Cent, PR65 Red
Challenging Early Issue

1865 1C PR65 Red NGC. CAC. Snow-PR2. Plain 5. A die chip near the ribbon on the neck and narrow repunching at the top of the 1 in the date identify the Snow-PR2 variety -- by far, the most frequently seen of three 1865 proof die pairs. Dappled lemon-gold, olive, and peach illuminate this sharply struck and unabraded Gem proof. The coin is housed in a prior generation NGC holder with the exposed hologram on the back. Only 500+ proofs were struck for this Civil War date, and most of those are no longer full red. Census: 5 in 65 Red, 1 finer. CAC: 1 in 65, 0 finer (9/24).
