Description

1866 Indian Cent
Pristine PR66 Red Cameo

1866 1C PR66 Red Cameo PCGS. This is a difficult date to find in high-grade proof condition at all, much less an example such as this well-preserved Premium Gem with excellent cameo contrast. Only 725 proof coins were estimated struck, and the Gem proof grade is seldom exceeded. Many examples show die rust on Liberty, but this piece shows little evidence of it -- perhaps there was more than one striking period. Generous luster and lots of mint frost on the devices further identify this as an early impression. The preservation and strike are both exceptional, producing well-detailed surfaces with no carbon or other distractions and no sign of contact. Note how sharp the strike is, even on the forward feather tips. Population: 5 in 66 Red Cameo, 0 finer (3/22).
