    Description

High Grade, Essentially Full Red 1868 Cameo Proof Cent

1868 1C PR66 Red and Brown Cameo NGC. Unlike many proofs of this issue, this coin does not show a medallic alignment. However, the reverse is perhaps 10% off a coin-turn alignment, leading one to speculate that the reverse die was loose and rotated until it turned 180 degrees, at which time it was tightened again and the remainder of the production run was struck with that alignment. The fields are deeply reflective with frosted devices, and there is little evidence of anything we would call "brown" present on either side--the coin really presents as full red. The surfaces are notably free from any contact marks. An exceptional, high grade proof striking of this scarce, early Indian cent. Population: 8 in 66, 0 finer (7/03). (#2292)

    Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 229L, PCGS# 2292)

    Weight: 3.11 grams

Metal: 95% Copper, 5% Tin and Zinc
