1877 Indian Cent, PR63 Red and Brown
    Highly Sought-After Proof Issue

1877 1C PR63 Red and Brown PCGS. Commenting on the mintage of 1877 Indian cent proofs in his book A Buyer's and Enthusiast's Guide to Flying Eagle and Indian Cents, Bowers says: "I estimate 1,250 to 1,500 pieces. Most probably the 1877 Proof Indian cents, Three Cent pieces and Shield nickels were sold in minor sets, and the Proof mintages of all three are the same. However, fewer of the Proof 1877 cents seem to have survived." The specimen offered here displays warm golden-tan patina, and a nice contrast between the motifs and the partially reflective fields. The design elements are sharply struck, with nice definition on the Indian's headdress, hair, and diamonds. No mentionable contact marks are apparent, but a few light flecks are scattered over the reverse. This key date possesses nice eye appeal for the grade.
