Description

Fully Struck 1877 Indian Cent
PR65 Red and Brown

1877 1C PR65 Red and Brown PCGS. Bold N in ONE. The 1877 Indian Head cent is the undisputed series key grade-for-grade, and it has some unique characteristics that further separate it from the rest of the pack. All of the unquestioned proofs were struck with the Bold N reverse, although there were three different reverse dies employed (the business strikes have the Weak N reverse) and some of the proofs were single-struck, according to Snow's series Guide Book. This piece shows considerable red remaining on the device high points, with medium brown predominating in the fields. There is no visible contact or carbon on this super Gem example. The high, squared-off rims and general sharpness identify this as one of the double-struck proofs. Population: 62 in 65 Red and Brown, 5 finer (8/10).(Registry values: N4719)
