Description

1877 Cent, PR65 Red Cameo
Very Rare in This Grade

1877 1C PR65 Red Cameo PCGS. CAC. The mintage of the 1877 proof cent is in dispute. Walter Breen in his Complete Encyclopedia gives a figure of 510+ produced. Research by R.W. Julian revised the estimate to 900. The 900+ figure given by David Bowers in his Flying Eagle and Indian Cent book is based on his contention that at least 1,500 were produced, with unsold pieces being destroyed or released into circulation.
The present Gem Cameo offering is a simply beautiful specimen with fully original copper-orange color. The razor-sharp strike is far superior to that often seen on business strikes in this series, and the fields glow with an intense reflectivity that could only have been imparted by proof production methods. A great representative of the ever-popular 1877 Indian cent in proof format. Population: 2 in 65 Cameo, 2 finer (12/12).(Registry values: P8)
