1880 Cent, PR66 Red and Brown
    Richly Patinated

1880 1C PR66 Red and Brown PCGS. This Premium Gem proof is devoid of brown toning, but the varying cherry-red, violet, and olive-gold hues encompassing each side are a little too deep to warrant the full Red designation from PCGS. The strike is full throughout, and there is ample reflectivity in the fields. No carbon spotting is observed. Housed in an old green label holder.

Population Data (3/15): PCGS reports 32 PR66 Red and Brown (four in PR66+) and four finer; the finest is one PR68 Red and Brown.

Heritage Commentary: With an ample mintage of 3,955 pieces, the proof 1880 Indian cent is usually available in the absolute sense, although high-grade pieces with significant mint red remain elusive.

Provenance: Rarities Sale (Bowers and Merena, 7/1997), lot 54.(Registry values: N1793)
