1886 Type One Cent, PR67 Red and Brown
Tied for Finest in This Color Category

1886 1C Type One PR67 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. This piece displays a bold strike showing sharpness all the way up to the feather tips and on the L, but a bit of weakness appears on the diamonds. The lustrous surfaces are appealing, displaying good field-device contrast and orange-brown coloration.

Variety: Type One, with the lowest headdress feather pointing between the I and C in AMERICA.

Population Data (3/15): PCGS shows only two PR67 Red and Brown and none finer. NGC lists one in this grade and none finer. All three are apparently CAC-approved.

Heritage Commentary: Many Indian cent collectors prefer Red and Brown pieces due to the somewhat higher cost of full Red coins. This is particularly true with the Type One 1886, as Red coins are genuinely scarce, regardless of grade. The present piece is among the finest certified in the Red and Brown color category.

Provenance: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 5/2008), lot 2393; Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2009), lot 1214; purchased from Legend Numismatics (11/2011).(Registry values: N4719)
