1886 Type Two Cent, PR66 Red and Brown
    Vivid Coloration, Conditionally Rare

1886 1C Type Two PR66 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. Both sides of this Premium Gem Red and Brown proof are awash in vivid shades of burgundy-blue, violet, and crimson-orange. The strike is bold, the fields reflective. No carbon spotting appears.

Variety: Type Two. The lowest headdress feather points between the C and A in AMERICA.

Population Data (3/15): This PR66 Red and Brown piece is tied for finest of this color designation at PCGS with two others. The finest at PCGS are three PR67 Red. NGC reports two in this grade and none finer. One of two in this grade with CAC green approval.

Heritage Commentary: Charles Barber modified the obverse hub in 1886, changing slightly the orientation of the obverse legend in relation to the tips of the headdress feathers. This Type Two variety represented only a small portion of the 4,290 proofs coined that year, and it is somewhat scarcer overall than its Type One counterpart.
