Description

1893 Six-Piece Proof Set
PR66-PR68, All NGC-Certified

1893 1C Cent PR66 Red and Brown NGC. This is an interesting cent and one that is especially interesting when considering the Red and Brown color designation: The obverse is full mint red and the reverse is deep brown. Our best speculation how this occurred is the obverse must have lain in a cabinet drawer face down, thus perfectly preserving it, and the reverse was exposed to the air, toning it. The field are deeply reflective and the obverse shows a crinkly, orange-peel effect not often seen on copper (but regularly seen on gold proofs of the era). Fully struck and almost entirely free of carbon. Census: 10 in 66 Red and Brown, 1 finer (3/15).(Registry values: N1793)
