Description

Unusual 1909 'Matte Proof' Eagle

1909 $10 --Matte Proof, Altered Surfaces--ANACS. Impaired PR60. The ANACS holder notes "Matte Proof" on it. The surface used on matte proofs in 1909 and 1910 was the briefly employed Roman Gold finish, which has a distinctively different look than the present example. The Roman Gold appearance consists of a smooth, finely granular surface texture. The surfaces on this interesting and unusual coin appear to be more a coarse-grained texture, almost as though the coin had been acid-treated to simulate a more traditional matte proof appearance. As further evidence of this, the surface luster is disturbed, and in a few areas, the surfaces actually appear somewhat porous. A personal inspection is suggested on this unusual but still attractive piece.(Registry values: N2998)
