Description
1909 Indian Eagle, PR66+
Seldom Seen, Scarcely Finer
1909 $10 Satin Finish, JD-1, R.5, PR66+ NGC. In 1908 the
sandblast proofs had proved unpopular with collectors who had much
preferred the brilliant and brighter proofs of yesteryear. The Mint
would reconsider their decision having chosen to revise the finish
for 1909 tailored better to the collector audience. The revision
resulted in the satin, or Roman, and matte finishes that would be
experimented with between 1909-1910, until the Mint would return to
the sandblast proof finish. The predominant debate of the 1909-1910
is in the preparation of the dies and how they had been altered in
order to achieve the granular surfaces, though acid treatment seems
to be the predominant theory. The coin has a reported mintage of 74 pieces, though John Dannreuther notes that more were in fact struck but were likely melted. The proofs were predominantly distributed via proof sets, but these would be systematically broken apart for individual distribution by dealers leaving few sets intact. The set distribution however, alongside a relatively remarkable survivorship estimated between 55 to 65 pieces, makes this one of the more prolific issues of the 1908-1915 series.
The 1909 proof, despite being more prominent in the series, is seldom seen and scarcely comes to auction. At Heritage this will only be our second offering of this issue in the last five years while being the finest we have offered in over a decade; it is also the first Plus-graded example we have seen. Given the scarcity, this is a supremely covetable opportunity for Registry collectors.
This example demonstrates gorgeous rich Midas-gold luster and some gentle deepening patina that begins to encircle the interior. The bold strike extenuates the devices. One small abrasion lies in the obverse field below Liberty's chin, while a second lies below the AM on the reverse. A small lint mark at the eagle's head resembles a feather plume. NGC has graded just 43 examples; only six examples are considered numerically finer (2/26). Some duplication likely exists in the published figures from crossovers and reholders.
