1910 Eagle, PR66
Highly Demanded Satin Proof
Just 10 Finer at NGC

1910 $10 JD-1, R.5, PR66 NGC. While mapping the issuance of Indian Head half eagle and quarter eagle proofs is fairly straight forward, with Satin proof issuance limited solely to 1909 and 1910, the Indian Head Eagle proofs are more complex. After a confusing, multi-type year in 1907, the Sandblast process was dominant in 1908. However, unlike the smaller denominations, there are a few Satin pieces known. Dannreuther suggests that these may have been experimental issues created as a result of the negative reaction the Sandblast issues received. He also suggests that the Satin finish represented the appearance of the Proofs before the sandblasting process.
Among the Satin-dominated 1909 and 1910 issues, there is controversy as to whether further experimentation on proof finishes occurred. In addition to the Satin finish, another Matte finish, struck from dies that were acid-treated, leaving a granular surface on the coins, has been proposed. However, Dannreuther now suggests that these were mere die states of the same type, as the striking pressure was more than sufficient to flatten the orange peel appearance that is characteristic of the Satin proofs into something more grainy, like the proposed Matte variety. This is further supported by the greater availability of the proposed granular-surface variety among the 1910 issues, as this year's mintage was more than double that of its 1909 counterpart.
The present offering retains a significant amount of this desirable orange-peeling that is a hallmark of early die state Satin proofs, especially on the obverse. The deeper orange-gold surface, with red-gold highlights, is extremely attractive, and covers sharply impressed devices.
This combination of factors creates one of the finest known examples of this coveted issue. NGC has graded just 5 examples in PF66, with only 10 finer, and PCGS's certified population is even smaller, at 3 and 5, respectively (2/26). The discerning proof gold collector should look no further than this consummate Premium Gem.
