Superb PR 66 1910 Ten Dollar

1910 PR 66 NGC. Ex: Trompeter. Like the 1910 quarter eagle and half eagle, the mintage of the eagle for this year is suspiciously large. It was recorded that 204 proofs were struck of this denomination, but in light of how few examples are known today either the mintage was recorded incorrectly or most were melted as unsold. Unfortunately, there was not enough collector demand at the time to support such a lofty mintage, and today the 1910 ten dollar is one of the rarest of all 20th century U.S. gold issues. The literature for this series states that perhaps as few as 15-20 pieces survive today with Akers having only recorded 15 appearances at public auction over a 37-year period. We believe, however, that the actual number of survivors is somewhat higher and estimate that perhaps as many as 30-45 pieces are extant today.
Proofs of this year continue the two-year tradition of using the Roman Gold finish, a hybrid matte and semi-brilliant proofing process that produced beautiful coins, but were all too often confused with business strikes by careless collectors or their heirs. This piece is a little more satiny than the 1909, and minutely deeper and richer in color. The surfaces are nothing less than spectacular with a bright, sparkling finish that is unaffected by even the tiniest impairments. The coin is identifiable by a minute spot located to the left of the tip of the nose, another below the ST of TRUST, and a tiny planchet defect above star 7 (which is scarcely discernable in the holder). Evidently given three blows from the dies to completely bring up the design; traces of the overlapping impressions can be seen on the date, both mottoes, parts of the legend, beak, neck, and leading edge of the eagle's wing. A first-rate specimen of this beautiful, two-year proofing process. Population: 3 in 66, only 1 finer (7/98). (NGC ID# 28HG, PCGS# 8892)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
