Description
1911 Indian Eagle, PR66
Rare Sandblast Proof
Only 95 Examples Struck
1911 $10 JD-1, Low R.5, PR66 NGC. The Sandblast Proofs had a
tryout with the public in 1908 but the feedback was not good,
prompting the Mint to introduce the Satin or Roman Finish proofs of
1909 and 1910. Still dissatisfied, collectors opted for change and
the Mint obliged by resurrecting the sandblast proofs similar to
the 1908 proof issue. Apparently, the public longed for the
brilliant and contrasted proofs of the late 1890s and early 1900s,
but the incuse Indian Head gold coins (quarter eagles and half
eagles) could not accept the die polishing needed to accomplish the
old "cameo" proof format. Fortunately, the sandblast finish
employed in 1911 received growing support and 95 proofs were sold.
John Dannreuther estimates 70 to 80 of those pieces survive today.
This Premium Gem example displays the expected finely faceted
texture inherent in the sandblast format. Slight loss of definition
along Liberty's face and forehead curls is an offshoot of the
format -- one that likely did not sit well with collectors who seek
razor-sharp definition. Likewise, the olive-gold color that attends
most 1911 proofs such as that shown by this example did not always
endear itself to collectors seeking lustrous yellow or orange-gold
patinas. Today's Indian gold specialists have grown to treasure
these sandblast coins for their artistry and subtle color
variations as seen on this sublime Premium Gem example. NGC Census:
