Description
Lovely, Deep "Mustard" Colored 1911 Proof Ten Dollar
1911 PR 64 NGC. Ex: Trompeter. In 1911 only 95 proof tens were reportedly struck and, like the preceding 1910, surviving examples are among the rarest of all 20th century gold issues. Akers (1980) only recorded 14 auction appearances over the 37 years he surveyed major gold sales, and estimates of survivors have generally been in the range of 20 pieces. We believe, however, that a somewhat larger number exists and estimate that today there are approximately 30-45 pieces in all grades.Proofs of this year are of the earlier matte variety, as are all the following years as well, and they show a distinctive "mustard" coloration, as Akers calls it. The surfaces have a dark, fine, sandblast finish, darker than the 1908 offered above, more akin to the dark 1908s usually seen.
This piece is identifiable for pedigree purposes by a minute reddish-brown spot in the field to the left of the lower lip of the Native American. A series of shallow, but grade-limiting shiny streaks are located in the lower left obverse field. On the reverse there is a planchet lamination that runs across the upper portion of the eagle's leg and into the left field, a Mint-made defect that could be easily missed as the sandblast finish was applied over the lamination. The wire rim is quite pronounced on the reverse, albeit somewhat thicker and less sharp than that on the 1909. The matte surfaces are exquisite and free from any signs of handling or cleaning; everything is bold throughout. Population: 1 in 64, 15 finer (7/98).
