Enchanting Sandblast Proof 1911 Indian Eagle

1911 $10 PR 65 PCGS. The Mint used both matte and sandblast finishes on the proof Indian eagles of 1911, although we do not know the ratios between these two deliveries. Actually, both types are rare, and only 25-35 pieces are believed extant from a combined mintage of 95 coins. With interesting mustard-gold color and finely granular features, this coin appears to be one of the surviving sandblast specimens. The surfaces are not as dark as those of many extant matte proof 1908 examples, a feature that only enhances the already significant eye appeal. Of course, the striking quality is superb with crisp definition over every device. The delicate surfaces have obviously been well cared for since the time of issue, as we can find no blemishes that would challenge the assigned grade. This issue is equally as rare as the satin proof issues of 1909 and 1910, as well as the matte proof deliveries of 1912-1915.
From the Richard Allen Collection. (NGC ID# 26YC, PCGS# 8893)

Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
