Description

1914 Indian Eagle, PR65
Only 50 Minted, Possibly 20 Survive

1914 $10 PR65 PCGS. CAC. The mintage of 50 proofs was the lowest production in the Indian eagle series. In fact, that mintage is tied with the 1915 proof double eagle coinage for the lowest mintage of any matte proof gold issue from 1908 to 1915. In Indian Gold Coins of the 20th Century, Mike Fuljenz suggests that no more than 20 of those proofs survive. Another estimate appears in A Guide Book of Gold Eagle Coins, where Dave Bowers writes: "It is likely that less than half the Proof mintage found buyers." He estimates that only 10 to 14 proofs exist today. Alternatively, PCGS suggests that 40 to 45 are known, nearly the entire mintage.

As of February 2018, the combined PCGS and NGC population is exactly the same as the mintage, 50 pieces, with an average grade of 65.2, a total that includes resubmissions. For the With Motto series from 1908 through 1915, PCGS has certified 203 matte proof Indian gold eagles with an average grade of 64.7. Having a total population of 18 PCGS certified proofs, the 1914 is one of the two extreme stoppers in a difficult series. The other is the final-year 1915 issue with a total PCGS population of 15 proofs.

This butterscotch-yellow example has the coarse-grained matte finish that is typical of all the 1914 and 1915 matte proof gold coins. The Mint experimented with a number of finishes for the gold proofs from 1908 through 1915, and ultimately abandoned the matte proof concept entirely. There are no marks evident under a loupe on either side of this lovely Gem that challenges the finest known of this proof issue. Population: 9 in 65 (1 in 65+), 1 finer (2/18). CAC: 3 in 65, 0 finer (2/18).
