Gem Matte Proof 1908 Indian Half Eagle

1908 $5 PR65 PCGS. The first year of the Indian half eagle series witnessed the production of 167 matte proof specimens at the Philadelphia Mint. In his Encyclopedia, Breen asserts that fewer than 100 proof sets were issued this year and, as such, the unsold half eagles were destroyed on January 2, 1909. Despite this and other forms of attrition, the 1908 is the most readily available matte proof Indian half eagle. Examples at or above the Gem level are, however, unquestionably rare when compared to the number of high quality type collectors and gold specialists in today's hobby. this example is virtually flawless and would perhaps grade a point or two higher if not for a barely noticeable hairline on the reverse that diagonally crosses the eagle's right (facing) wing and traverses into the upper right obverse field. Another fantastic opportunity for the astute proof gold collector.
