Desirable Matte Proof 1908 Half Eagle

1908 $5 PR64 NGC. The first year of the Indian half eagle series witnessed the production of 167 matte proof specimens at the Philadelphia Mint. In his Encyclopedia, Breen asserts that fewer than 100 proof sets were issued this year and, as such, the unsold half eagles were destroyed on January 2, 1909. This impressive proof survivor has finely etched surfaces, and a virtually pristine obverse. The reverse is a couple trivial luster grazes separated from an even higher grade. Surprisingly for a limited proof mintage, there is a short die crack (as struck) at the date.
