Description
1910 Indian Half Eagle, PR66
Attractive Satin Finish
Rarely Seen Finer
1910 $5 JD-1, R.4, PR66 NGC. The satin (often called Roman)
finish of the 1909 and 1910 proofs are today considered some of the
most desirable of all the matte Indian five proofs. The
Philadelphia Mint struck a generous production of 250 proof Indian
half eagles in 1910, the largest proof mintage of the series, using
the same Satin finish used on proofs the year before. John
Dannreuther estimates only 80-90 examples are extant in all grades,
making the 1910 slightly more elusive than the 1908, 1911, and 1912
issues. It seems likely that many of the proofs went unsold in 1910
and were melted after the end of the year, tracing to the public's
disappointment about the finish when the proofs were issued. This
is an exceptional Premium Gem example of the smooth and glistening
1910 issue, which represents the brightest finish of the Matte
Proof era. Only about a dozen examples exist any finer. NGC Census:
13 in 66 (1 in 66+), 10 finer (11/24).From The rhp Collection.
