    1910 Half Eagle, PR63
    Roman Finish Format

1910 $5 PR63 PCGS Secure. The 1910 Indian half eagles set the mintage record for proofs within the series, at 250 pieces. However, most were probably melted as unsold at year's end. The 1909 and 1910 gold proof coinage was of the Roman or Satin Finish format, brighter than the dark sandblast or matte proofs that occurred at the inception of the new series in 1908. The 1910 today only survives to the extent of a few dozen pieces, roughly equal to other series issues with lower proof production figures. PCGS estimates that 60 to 75 examples survive of the 1910 half eagle, while they give a survival 70 to 90 for the 1912 matte proof, with a reported proof mintage of 144 pieces.
The present Select proof certified by PCGS is fully struck throughout, showing far more detail than most circulation strikes of the series will ever display. Note the complete tiny, intricate feathers on the forepart of the eagle's breast and the subtle detailing throughout the Indian's headdress. The surfaces are a bright lemon-yellow and the fields are lightly hairlined on each side, more noticeable on the reverse. Population: 4 in 63, 21 finer (11/12).(Registry values: N4719)
