Description

1911 Half Eagle, PR66
Just 10 Finer at PCGS; CAC Approved

1911 $5 JD-1, R.4, PR66 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Eliasberg. Deep orange-gold surfaces contain significant olive overtones. A small spot before the eye is the only mark of mention. Striking weakness is limited to the lowest two feathers on the obverse, as well as the uppermost feathers of the forward wing. Eye appeal is stunning, especially given the varied and vibrant hues on the obverse.
With the introduction of the Indian Head half eagle design in 1908, the Mint abandoned the Brilliant Proof format that been used since the format's introduction. For the first year of the Indian Head half eagle, due to its incused design, the Sandblast finish was adopted. This was achieved by specially striking the coins and then subjecting them to a fine stream of sand. In 1909 and 1910, the Mint switched to a Satin finish for an unknown reason. Mintages remained low. At the 1910 A.N.A. Convention, a vote was taken to determine the preferred proofing method, and the Sandblast finish emerged victorious. The Mint reverted to it in 1911, and it was used for the rest of the series.
The 1911 proof half eagles typically come with a deeper olive-gold color, as seen here. The deeper hue indicates the use of a coarser grain of sand, although environmental factors during the coin's storage can also impact the color.
The present offering is simply one of the finest 1911 proof half eagles that is available to collectors today. PCGS has certified just seven in 66, and the CAC population is just two (2/26). Above this level, PCGS notes 10 certifications. Combined with the exquisite toning displayed on this specimen, it is poised to occupy a prime position in a specialist's cabinet.
