Outstanding PR67 1911 Half Eagle
1911 $5 PR67 NGC. After the two-year experimentation with the lighter "Roman Gold" finish in 1909-1910, the proof coins of 1911 resumed the darker matte finish of 1908. Breen's description of the finish for 1911 proofs was: "Matte finish, dull and darker than unc., nearest to 1908 but differing minutely in texture of grain." The mintage for the 1911 half eagle in proof was limited to 139 coins, and of that number it is probably reasonable to estimate that some 55-65 coins are still extant today. Of course, most are not as well preserved as this piece. Only 11 other pieces have been so graded by the two major services (minus an uncertain number of resubmissions) and four are finer (11/05). This is a magnificent coin that is almost perfectly preserved. The thousands of tiny facets from the sandblasting process show individual sparkle that reflect randomly around the surfaces. There is only one (barely) noticeable shiny spot: a vertical streak that is located on the tassel on the forward part of the headdress. Simply splendid overall quality and strong visual appeal. From The Clausen Family Collection.(Registry values: N10218)
