Description
1912 Half Eagle, PR65+
Spectacular CAC-Approved Gem Proof
1912 $5 JD-1, R.4, PR65+ PCGS. CAC. The Dannreuther
reference estimates only 80 to 100 proofs survive from a 144-piece
mintage, while PCGS suggests 70 to 90 survivors. The Heritage
archives indicate we see on average only a single auction
appearance every year for the 1912 proofs. While the 1912 issue is
seen slightly less often than the 1911 or earlier proofs, it is
considerably more available than the challenging 1913, 1914, and
1915 proofs. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth estimate the 1912 proofs
rank fifth in scarcity among the Indian five proofs. The tan-gold surfaces on this high-end Gem example are sharply struck and essentially free of any identifying marks. Smooth matte surfaces surround the bold devices. Although several references concur that the 1912 proofs are similar to the 1908 sandblast half eagles in appearance, this example is both livelier and lighter in color. The finely grained sandblast format leaves a perceptible smoother finish than earlier proofs that is visually pleasing and sparkle when viewed under a lamp. This exceptional proof is extremely choice for assigned Gem level as confirmed by the PCGS Plus designation and the accompanying CAC endorsement. Remarkably few 1912 proof half eagles have earned the CAC green sticker among the known examples. This is an ideal sandblast proof type coin and the equal in eye appeal of any 1912 proof Indian five we have handled in recent memory. PCGS Population: 11 in 65 (1 in 65+, the present coin), 21 finer. CAC: 2 in 65, 6 finer (11/25).
