1912 Matte PR66 Indian Five Dollar
Rich Color and Lovely, Sparkling Surfaces
1912 $5 PR66 NGC. The 1912 half eagle proofs, even though
struck with a matte surfaces, normally show lighter-colored
surfaces than the 1908- and 1911-dated issues that precede them.
Seldom are examples finer than the present Premium Gem available.
The surfaces on this piece are deep mustard-gold, showing the
typical crisply detailed strike and fine-grained texture that
creates a subtle sparkle. A thin (almost undetectable) hairline
runs down from the D is the grade-determining factor, although
there are several light luster grazes present on each side. Census:
