    Outstanding 1912 Matte Proof Five

1912 PR 67 NGC. Ex: Trompeter. There were 144 proof half eagles minted in this year, and as expected, the number of survivors is far fewer than one might imagine from the mintage. Some catalogers in the past have claimed that perhaps as few as 15 separate pieces exist today, but we believe a larger number are actually extant, with perhaps as many as 25-40 pieces known. One can easily speculate that many were either melted in the Mint or entered circulation. We do know, however, that only 8 pieces have been certified by NGC (7/98) and 23 by PCGS (7/98), with this piece being tied with twelve others for second finest certified honors.
This is a superior matte proof that, when closely examined, shows thousands of fine, sparkling granules and color that is lighter and more reddish in hue than the 1911. The sandblast surfaces are free from shiny spots or scuffs. A wire rim is almost complete on the obverse, being least nearest the date and sharpest at the upper right. The extruded wire rim is also nearly complete on the reverse, missing only at the upper left of that side. The coin is identifiable by a minute "flyspeck" below the D in DOLLAR. Population: 1 in 67, none are finer (7/98).
