    1913 Indian Half Eagle, PR66
    Second-Rarest Matte Proof Five

1913 $5 PR66 PCGS. In the past, the 1913 matte proof Indian half eagle has been regarded as the third-rarest issue in the eight-coin proof set, supported by survival estimates from PCGS and Garrett and Guth. However, the frequency of actual auction appearances suggests that the 1913 proof is either rarer than previously thought, or has an unusually high number of pieces tightly held in private collections. Our Auction Archives show only 16 prior appearances of the 1913 in more than two decades, whereas the 1914 has been offered 19 times, the 1912 has been seen 24 times, and the 1909 has made 25 appearances. Only the 1915 proof has been more elusive, with eight offerings in the past two decades in our Signature Sales.

The certified population data closely parallels the proportion of auction appearances for the matte proof fives. PCGS and NGC combined has seen only 49 examples of the 1913 in all grades, and only the 1915 is scarcer, showing a combined certified population of 39 coins. Even if no resubmissions are reflected in the census data (an extremely unlikely scenario), it is a certainty that less than half of the 99-coin 1913 mintage survives. Mike Fuljenz estimates as few as 30 to 40 coins are known.

Representatives of this issue are clustered around the PR64 to PR66 grade range, meaning that just about any example encountered is going to exhibit outstanding quality. This exceptional piece does not disappoint. Fully rendered design elements exhibit seemingly perfect matte surfacing, with rich olive-gold color overall. This is the first PR66 coin we have handled in just more than a decade, and we anticipate active interest from Indian gold specialists.(Registry values: N7079)
