    1914 Half Eagle, PR66
    High-Quality Matte Proof

1914 $5 PR66 NGC. The mintage of the 1914 half eagle matte proof is given as 125 pieces, but that high number is at odds with the total survivors today. Public (collector-dealer) dissatisfaction with the matte proofs was at such a peak that few of those minted were actually distributed, and the rest were melted as unsold. The Mint continued fiddling with the matte proof format even in this late year, marginally increasing the microscopic granule size of the 1913 issue to a bit larger, a move that makes the 1914 matte proofs appear a tad darker. This piece has surfaces with mustard-gold color that are nearly free of marks, save for a small field tick between stars 1 and 2. A couple of tiny indents in the planchet near 9 o'clock on the reverse are Mint-made and as struck. These are exceedingly minor quibbles that are consistent with the PR66 grade; this is nonetheless a high-quality coin of stunning aesthetic beauty. Census: 12 in 66, 11 finer (6/13).(Registry values: N7079)
