Regal Superb Gem Proof 1914 Half Eagle
1914 $5 PR68 NGC. Of the 125 pieces reported to have been struck eighty two years ago, it appears that approximately half are unaccounted for. To date, NGC and PCGS have graded 44 examples in various grades, and there are certainly a few more out there in old time collections which have not been graded, as well as some duplicate submissions that may not have been removed from the Population Reports. Finding and obtaining an example is certainly a challenge for even the most advanced numismatist, and the present coin is as perfectly preserved as any seen. The color is bright yellow, completely even and undisturbed by time or error. The surfaces are simply Superb, and lack any sign of contact or even the tiniest spot to distract the eye.The 1914 is the next to last year the lighter Roman finish of proofing which was employed in the U.S. Mint. Breen notes in his 1988 Encyclopedia that the proofs of this year have a coarser sandblast finish than on the previous two years. The finish and color are very similar to the previous 1913 with the primary difference being in color and overall brightness of surfaces. This 1914 does indeed have lighter colored surfaces that lack most of the green-gold color seen on the 1913. It is considerably brighter than the previous two years.
A high wire rim or fin completely encircles the obverse. Even lengthy examination with a magnifier fails to reveal any mentionable marks, shiny spots, or toning spots that might be used for future identification purposes. PCGS in their Population Report note the finest seen is PR66. The present coin is tied with a small group of four specimens for the Finest they have seen. One of the finest examples known of this 20th century rarity and in fact, none are graded higher of the entire type. Census: 4 in 68, 0 finer (11/05).(Registry values: N10218)
