    Description

Prized Matte Proof 1914 Indian Half Eagle

1914 $5 PR64 NGC. Even the reported mintage for this year of 125 proofs does not accurately convey the present day rarity of this elusive Matte Proof Half Eagle. All indications would lead one to conclude that no more than 40-50 recognizable proofs are extant today.
The 1914 is the next to the last year the matte process of proofing was employed in the U.S. Mint. Breen notes in his 1988 Encyclopedia that the proofs of this year have a coarser sandblast finish than on the previous two years. The finish of this specimen certainly matches this description and both sides display a rich khaki green and golden color. A paper thin blemish behind the eagle's neck appears to be the only deterrent to a Gem rating. Population: 6 in 64, 14 finer (9/01).
