1908 Quarter Eagle, PR66
First-Year Matte Proof Finish

1908 $2 1/2 JD-1, R.4, PR66 NGC. The renaissance in American coinage initiated by President Roosevelt included a completely new design for the quarter eagle in 1908. The sculptor selected was Bela Lyon Pratt, and the sunken relief format for the quarter eagle was introduced to Roosevelt by Dr. William Sturgis Bigelow. The design features the bust of Brule Lakota Chief Hollow Horn Bear in full headdress on the obverse and a perched bald eagle on the reverse. Roosevelt approved the proposed design, and the Mint was instructed to proceed.
The sunken relief format presents the primary devices in relief below the field surfaces, meaning the fields of the die face could not be polished to create the familiar mirrored proof effect. Instead, the 1908 proofs employed a sandblast proof gold finish. As described by John Dannreuther in United States Proof Coins, Volume IV: "The dark finish found on the 1908 Indian Head quarter eagle is unique to the series, as a coarser sand grain was used to sandblast the coins after they were struck." Only 236 proofs were struck with an estimate between 100 to 120 known survivors. This exceptional Premium Gem displays deep orange-gold surfaces on silky-smooth matte surfaces hosting subtle olive undertones. The reverse is flawless, and magnification reveals only a few tiny contact nicks on the obverse, typical on matte proof finishes.
