1908 Indian Quarter Eagle, PR67
High End First-Year Proof Type Coin
1908 $2 1/2 JD-1, R.4, PR67 NGC. Bela Lyon Pratt's sunken
relief design made it impossible for the Mint to produce proofs of
the coinage with their traditional polished fields. On previous
designs, the fields represented the elevated portion of the die
face, making it easy to simply polish the fields and produce the
mirrored effect so long seen on proof coinage. However, on Pratt's
design, the fields represented the recessed of the die face and
could not be polished without marring the design elements. As a
result, the Mint introduced the sandblast finish as a distinctive
feature of the proof coinage that eliminated the need for die
polishing.This Superb Gem example is just outside the Condition Census for the issue. A sharp strike and luminous, pristine surfaces produce ample eye appeal. While many sandblast proof gold pieces have uniform color, this piece shows orange-gold and wheat-gold hues. Census: 33 in 67 (3 in 67+), 3 finer (7/25).
