Description

1908 Quarter Eagle, PR63
Inaugural Matte Proof Issue

1908 $2 1/2 PR63 PCGS. JD-1, R.4. This is one of about 100 to 120 known surviving examples of the first-year 1908 Indian Head matte proof quarter eagle. The sunken-relief nature of the new design resulted in this distinctive sandblast finish that collectors of the era were put off by. However, these proofs are highly regarded today. Finely textured yellow-gold surfaces exhibit the distinct mattelike appearance. Design detail is complete, and contact is minimal.(Registry values: N4719)
