Description

1908 Indian Quarter Eagle, PR65
Fine-Grained Matte Finish

1908 $2 1/2 PR65 PCGS. CAC. The 1908 Indian quarter eagle had a mintage of 236 proofs, and they are the most easily obtained proofs of the design. Combined with their status as the first year of issue for the design, these coins are extremely popular with collectors, and they are an excellent candidate for a type collector.

This lovely Gem has a fine matte finish on its brilliant fire-gold surfaces, and exhibits a bold strike as expected. A loupe reveals trivial marks that prevent a higher grade. PCGS has certified 101 examples in all grades with an average grade of 64.5, a total that includes resubmissions. We have offered 39 higher-grade examples in our auctions over the last quarter-century. That figure includes multiple appearances of a smaller number of pieces. Population: 30 in 65, 21 finer. CAC: 6 in 65, 8 finer (2/18).
