Splendid 1908 Matte Proof Quarter Eagle, PR66 NGC

1908 $2 1/2 PR66 NGC. The coarse, matte finish of this coin was the undoing of most of its counterparts from the 236-piece original mintage. While proof gold of this type is now the province of advanced specialists, it was shunned by most contemporary numismatists. We do not know whether melting in the Mint or careless spending on the part of disgruntled collectors claimed most proof 1908 Quarter Eagles. In all likelihood, both factors contributed to the attrition of this date.
For several years now, we have clung to the belief that 75-100 proof 1908 Indian Quarter Eagles are extant, and we still see no reason to adjust this estimate either up or down. This is the first premium quality Gem to appear in one of our Signature Sales since November of 2000. It is a sharply impressed specimen with rich olive-khaki color. Distracting blemishes are virtually nonexistent--as one should expect for an expertly preserved PR66 representative.
