Description

1908 Indian Two and a Half, Matte PR66
First-Year Issue, Exemplary Eye Appeal

1908 $2 1/2 PR66 NGC. The 1908 quarter eagle was the first year of issue for Bela Pratt's radically new reduced relief for the quarter and half eagle denominations. Compared to previous proof issues, the mintage for this issue was high, with the production of 236 proof coins. However, fewer than half that number are believed extant today.

A Premium Gem example of this matte proof issue, the first-year American matte proofs of the new 1908 gold Indian Head and Saint-Gaudens designs were a startling departure from the finish of the previous Liberty Head issues. This coin displays rich golden-orange color. Aside from a small mark in the obverse field near the Indian's chin, the surfaces are virtually pristine, adding to the appeal. Census: 37 in 66, 31 finer (12/13).(Registry values: N7079)
