Lovely Matte Proof 1908 PR 66 PCGS

1908 PR 66 PCGS. A superlative matte finish proof, tinted a rich olive-gold and orange. The surfaces are a joy to behold, being totally void of shiny spots, hairlines, or other impairments to these briefly produced and rare matte proof issues. Proofs of this year are always a popular item with collectors. Not only is it the first year of issue for the incuse Indian design, and a low mintage date with only 236 proofs struck (many of which were melted), but all proofs also have a distinctive and quite lovely deep khaki color. One notes a total of 73 have been graded by PCGS, with multiple submittals the true figure is probably lower. Perhaps the total extant would number in the range of 75-100 pieces in various states of preservation, with this coin near the very top of those perfectly preserved. Population: 7 in 66, 1 higher in The PCGS Population Report (4/97).
